Another Day

10/22/05 The 534b server kit is here.

The Ravenous Mod didn;t work, but GFLCaesar's sure seems to. Let's give it a try.

Caesar's Basic Mod

Never mind the mods. I can't get defaultcore.txt on client and server to agree no matter what I try.

Well, live and learn. SQL was a big disappointment, the server was never debugged enough to run under SQL.  It's a pity no one told me that before I tried it.

In other news: I'm testing a totally new server configuration, complete with a large map and mods. The mods are those of Capt Ravenous and Chris Jones' Rebalance kit.  The files are required to play on this server, and a link is provided to the right.

One more reset, but we're now running SQL so there shouldn't be another!

10/27/03 I'm sorry guys, but a problem in metamap.gf required another reset. The damn Feds kept making peace! :)
1025/03

The campaign has been reset to use the full-size multiplayer map. There was no clear winner of the last game, although the Feds appeared to be gaining ground.

Why another Dynaverse 3 server?

Home

The answer can be summed up in one word: stability. The campaigns of Wiz and Dynablah are innovative and great, but they have been marred by reliability issues. It is frustrating to build up a ship and advance the career of your character only to see it all erased by a server reset. Another Day is meant to provide a stable server. The current campaign isn't fancy or fast. I'm aware of the speed issue around moving between hexes, for example. But, it does seem quite stable, and will be run in a more professional manner. That specifically means:

  • Campaigns will run continuously from the 2nd to the 29th of each month. The extended run time and a few "bumped" parameters are meant to give losing empires a chance to bounce back.
  • Player populations will remain small in order to counter limited bandwidth, and to control the impact of the server on the hardware.
  • Resets will be kept to an absolute minimm. If a player gets stuck in the game, there are other ways to free him. The server is actually designed for that.

From the players' viewpoint, the following rules apply:

  • Line-of-supply + 2 applies. That means you do not attack beyond two hex outside your main empire territory. Isolated areas you have captured do not count, there must be a path back to the main territory.
  • Alt-F4 simply to preserve your ship in a player-vs-player battle is forbidden.
  • If you tractor another player, you must release him and allow him a chance to surrender before finishing him off.

Above all, have fun. Just be aware that violators will lose their characters.
